The course is offered by a consortium of reputed research institutions possessing a wide range of expertise, reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of conservation. The course is funded by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), one of the largest conservation organizations in the world.

The degree is currently awarded by the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) and from July 2008, the degree will be awarded by the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), a deemed university of international repute. It is based at the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), a TIFR institution in basic biological research and augments it through its excellent teaching facilities.

The Centre of Wildlife Studies (CWS), a non-profit wildlife research institution recognized by Department of Science and Technology, Government of India provides core academic support through its scientific staff as well as  administrative and logistic support.

The National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS, www.iisc.ernet.in/nias) through its division of behavioral ecology is also another academic partner in the program.

The course recognizes the fact that one of the preconditions of achieving wildlife conservation is scientific research and capacity building among nationals in biodiversity-rich countries, in partnership with local institutions.

 Wildlife Conservation Society

The Wildlife Conservation Society saves wildlife and wild lands through careful science, international conservation, education, and the management of the world’s largest system of urban wildlife parks. These activities change attitudes toward nature and help people imagine wildlife and humans living in sustainable interaction on both a local and a global scale. WCS is committed to this work because we believe it essential to the integrity of life on Earth
